This is Randi Hacker with another Postcard from Abroad from the KU Centers for East Asian Studies and Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
The journey to Palestina, a village deep in the Amazon jungle, includes a 10-hour boat ride from the slightly-less remote regional capital of Puerto Esperanza. Here, there is very little that connects the villagers to the outside world: no electrical grid, no water supply and no roads leading in or out which hasn’t prevented young people from seeking their fortunes elsewhere. To prevent more young people from leaving, villagers are looking for ways to entice them to stay. And so, the Peruvian government has invested time and money to connect residents with the rest of the global community by providing internet service, and educational computers for the kids.
