004 JIM JONES WHEN A RELIGIOUS MADMAN TAKES POWER

Listen Later

Sources describe the trajectory of Jim Jones, a charismatic leader who founded the People's Temple under ideals of social justice and racial integration. The account details how the group moved from Indiana to California and finally to a commune in Guyana, where Jones imposed absolute control based on physical abuse, paranoia, and isolation. The situation culminated on November 18, 1978, after the assassination of Congressman Leo Ryan by cult guards on an airstrip. Faced with imminent legal pressure, Jones orchestrated a mass "revolutionary suicide" using a cyanide-laced drink. This tragedy resulted in the deaths of more than 900 people, including hundreds of children, and remains one of the worst incidents of civilian casualties in American history.
