Episode 6 focuses on Adherence to Treatment, and features Professor Richard Costello, Associate Professor of Medicine at The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and Consultant Respiratory Physician at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, Ireland.

 

Richard breaks adherence down into three components: Initiation, Implementation and Persistence, and highlights the complexity of the issue, involving not only the patient, but also the physician and the healthcare system.

 

Throughout our discussion, Richard highlights the central role of the GP in establishing and maintaining patient adherence, and the value of our work in contributing towards our patients’ long-term health.

 

Richard also reviews some of the factors affecting the three components of adherence, and gives practical tips that can help increase adherence levels.
