We talked to Becky Timmons, director of applications research at Alltech, about the importance of fish oil and the need to find substitutes. About a million tons of fish oil are produced each year. Most of it is used to make feed for fish farms but a growing segment is consumed as dietary supplements. Since there is a shortage of fish oil, producers are forced to use substitutes like soybean meal and soy oil. That means there is less DHA omega-3 in farm-raised fish.
