Ren: Behind the Practice

007: Patterns with Sophie

Listen Later

Every few conversations on Ren: Behind the Practice, I’m going to pause and zoom out to look at the patterns emerging across the interviews. Even though each practitioner has a different modality and path, certain themes keep surfacing once you start connecting the dots.

This episode idea actually came from Heather Schirle in Episode 3, who suggested that it might be helpful to periodically reflect on what’s showing up across the conversations.

What we explored:

  • Pattern #1: Practitioners were trained to serve — not to build businesses
Deeply skilled practitioners often aren’t taught how to build something sustainable. So they chase tactics instead of laying foundations.

  • Pattern #2: Visibility feels deeply uncomfortable for many practitioners
It’s not “marketing” they hate — it’s performative visibility. Conversation-based visibility tends to feel much more aligned.

  • Pattern #3: Practitioners struggle to explain work that creates intangible results
The outcomes are real, but hard to describe. Messaging gets easier when it connects directly to clear pain points + dream outcomes.

If any of these patterns resonate with you, it doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. It usually means you’re building something meaningful in an environment where the guidance hasn’t caught up yet — which is exactly why these conversations matter.
