Listen Later

Having spent much of her career in the cultural and creative sectors at organisations such as Channel 4, Roundhouse and Creative Skillset, Asma Shah was inspired to create a truly effective programme for young women in East London. Established in 2011 as a virtually funding-free pilot, You Make It combines creative workshops, mentoring, work placements, business initiatives and holistic care to help guide working class, women of colour to happier and more independent lives. The organisation have also devised You Change It: an anti-racism programme designed with a human-centred approach and delivered by facilitators with lived experiences, that allows people to come together, learn and solidify their values to stand up against racism in practical ways.

In this episode we talk about :

  • The Anti-Racism programme,You Change It
  • How Asma set up the charity, You Make It including the how and the why
  • Why knowing what the transformation is vital.
  • Why it's crucial to look after yourself in this kind of work, when the conversations you're having, and the stories of others are really hard and upsetting.
