Wake Up Call

009: How I'm Coping With Anxiety Triggers

Listen Later

In today’s episode, I’m sharing some personal news… my anxiety came back! My job is transitioning back to the office and traveling for sales, and it brought me back to one of my biggest anxiety triggers: my car. So, I thought I’d share some of the coping mechanisms I’m using to handle this old trigger, and I wanted you to know that if something triggers your anxiety even though you’re putting in the work to manage your stress, you are not alone and it does not reflect on you at all! I hope this episode helps you and resonates with you.

  • 3 Key takeaways I want to highlight from this episode are:

    • When a fearful thought arises, it’s important to acknowledge it, but not “hook into” it. Focus on taking deep belly breaths and talking yourself through the moment, reminding yourself that you’re safe and thanking your body for letting you know something’s up.
    • In the mornings, leave plenty of time for self-care and getting ready, so you can eliminate the “rushed” feeling that could heighten your anxiety.
    • If you are triggered into an anxious state, give yourself grace. Your body is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do in response to a traumatic event or memory.
    • Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that’s me!). I work in corporate sales by day and am a personal development guru and Life Coach by night. My goal in this podcast is to share valuable and actionable tips on what I call the “Core Four” - mindfulness, movement, habits, and growth - so you can build a life that feels true to you. I will be interviewing people who have had a “wake up call” that their good-on-paper life wasn’t lighting them up, and what they did to change that.
