The Italian Job

#009 Marsala DOC and Italy's 247 year old fortified wine history with Ivan Cappello

Listen Later

This is episode nine of The Italian Job, a podcast about Italian wine hosted by wine writer and critic Paul Caputo. Fortified wines may not be at the height of casual wine drinker demand at the moment, but but Marsala's almost 250 years of fortified wine production is worth celebrating. Produced in a number of different styles that touch on colour, maturation length and sweetness, there is a world to discover. Winemaker and avid collector Ivan Cappello talks us through Marsala's history, starting with its creation in the late 18th century by John Woodhouse of Liverpool. Richard Siddle  of The Buyer also talks us through our changing attitudes to fortified wine and what the trade might be able to do to jump start our appreciation of these unfashionable pillars of wine culture.
