This is Randi Hacker with another Postcard from Abroad from the KU Center for East Asian Studies.
Korea’s Joseon Dynasty lasted 500 years. It was during the Joseon that the capital of the country was moved to Seoul. It was during the Joseon that King Sejong created the Korean alphabet. But most importantly, it is during the Joseon that two of the most popular television K-dramas take place. K-drama, like K-pop, is Korean entertainment that’s wildly popular in China and Japan. The Jewel in the Palace is your typical upstairs/downstairs palace intrigue but My Love from a Star, well… it breaks the mold. An alien is abandoned in Joseon Korea. Using his ability to stop time, he saves the life of a sweet girl. 400 years later, he finds her again reincarnated as a shallow Korean TV celebrity. The show flips back and forth between Joseon Korea and contemporary Seoul as it tells the story of their destiny which means this Postcard has to end with this: Joseon…Joseoff. Yeah.
