  • Separate feelings from facts by recognizing this is negotiation, not betrayal, and respond with a clear counter-proposal instead of emotional reactions.
  • Define your absolute minimum terms upfront so you can negotiate confidently and walk away without resentment if they cannot meet them.
  • Price the value of your time and expertise, not your current financial anxiety, and use clear boundaries and written agreements to prevent exploitation and endless timelines.
  • Consider a hybrid deal of flat rate with a hard end date with weekly rates beyond, to meet them in the middle and create urgency while protecting your time.
  • Have very clear expectations upfront that everybody agrees to before day one so you can always point to those expectations.
  • Lay out the minimum parameters that make this an opportunity rather than a distraction to the goals that you want to achieve.
  • Protect yourself, your mental health and your relationships. Don’t let it go to waste because you don’t feel like having a difficult conversation with them.
