• Draft a value paragraph to start a new conversation and build a relationship that goes beyond one project.
• Explore and watch what they have worked on to get a better sense of who they are and why they do what they do.
• Five different approaches in relationship building (based on context):
• Peer-to-peer: somebody who share similar goals and/or obstacles
• Expert: somebody who’s doing now what you want to do next, or has overcome obstacles where you’re currently stuck.
• Mentor: an extension of the expert approach where you continue going for guidance, mentorship or expertise.
• Advocate: someone who can open doors and facilitate introductions or recommendations to opportunities.
• Gatekeeper: the person making the decision to hire you.
• Consider using the expert approach and be very clear on how they can help you.
• When considering step back roles, address overqualification directly and clearly explain why you are committed beyond just filling a short term gap.
