01 - On Hope

Listen Later

Welcome to issue one of The Attention Span Newsletter by me, Canan (Ja’anan) Marasligil. I’m a writer, a literary translator, an artist and a curator of cultural programmes based in Amsterdam.

Every other week, I take the time to reflect and offer a glimpse of how I see the world through the lens of culture, art, translation, poetry and literature. Each issue has a short essay, a nerdy look at translation, a page from one of my notebooks, a list of things to read, watch or listen to, and a highlight from my archives.

Listening/Watching/Reading tips:

Max Richter’s Earth Day concert on BBC radio is available for a couple more weeks to listen to online. It’s always a joy to listen to his Richter’s work, as well as his thoughts on the world and why he makes music. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001l4fs?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile

A short film (14 minutes) on ARTE about a tiny island in Scotland, called Rúm, which was nicknamed “The Forbidden Island”. It’s short, it’s a bit of escapism, and it’s quite beautiful (also, I love Scotland!) https://www.arte.tv/en/videos/107952-003-A/city-country-culture/

Why Is a Day Job Seen as the Mark of an Artist’s Failure? This piece is about an exhibition in Texas which presents artists discussing the jobs they have or had (if you are not a NYTimes subscriber, you can also learn more about this story on Monocle radio). It’s a subject I find important, especially when you know how precarious the lives of cultural workers, writers and artists is. (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/08/arts/design/artist-job-blanton-museum.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare and https://monocle.com/radio/shows/monocle-on-culture/600/)
