In the same way we have become accustomed to always striving for success in our endeavors, Allah has given us the month of Ramadan so that we become accustomed to righteous good deeds. Perhaps we would be among those who attain TAQWA. Hence He said (Subhanahu wa ta'ala):

...كُتِبَ عَلَيكُمُ الصِّيامُ كَما كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذينَ مِن قَبلِكُم لَعَلَّكُم تَتَّقونَ

...Fasting has been prescribed upon you is just as it was to the nations that came before you perhaps you may attain TAQWA.
