COURSE PURPOSE (REVIEW)
This course explores the acclaimed Star Trek character Data's moral evolution to construct frameworks and best practices towards developing ethical artificial intelligence centered on the uplifting humanistic values embodied across Data's expansive narrative arc spanning The Next Generation series.COURSE OBJECTIVES (REVIEW)
- 1. Analyze key elements of Data's morality including his demonstration of personal agency, purpose beyond functionality, and situational reasoning resolving complex dilemmas.
- 2. Connect insights from Data's illustrated ethical growth arc to established techniques for instilling core values early into modern machine learning systems, including preference learning, values modeling, and protocol alignment methodologies.
- 3. Apply lessons from Data's conduct and decision-making directly to virtuous frameworks and leadership principles for innovators and researchers guiding the responsible advancement of real-world AI systems.
