He later served as an executive with General Mills where among other positions he served as president, Chief Operating Officer and eventually vice chairman of the Board of Directors. For his cost-cutting and elimination of many jobs, he was widely dubbed "The Cereal Killer".
He was also the CEO of the Los Angeles TImes from 1995 to 2000.
