Pauline Elizabeth Hopkins was a prolific and creative force in American literature—a novelist, playwright, short fiction writer, editor, actress, and singer. Yet, as an African-American woman writer, her remarkable contributions have often been overlooked in the annals of literary history. While she was contemporaneous with notable figures like Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Charles W. Chesnutt, and Paul Laurence Dunbar, it is only now that Hopkins is beginning to receive the critical recognition she deserves. Her most significant work, Contending Forces A Romance Illustrative of Negro Life North and South, published in 1900, remains a cornerstone of her legacy.
