PART 2 OF 2 ON BECOMING A LIFE-LONG LEARNER
My Goal - Learn to Play Guitar
I had the goal but was poor at executing it. You can have 20 amazing ideas but if you never execute any of them, what do you really have?
It's important to have dreams….but you have to back that up with DOing!
Faith without works is dead….James 2:14-17

5 WAYS THAT YOU WILL ACHIEVE SOMETHING NEW THIS YEAR
5 Actionable Steps:
1. Set a goal -
What is it that you have been wanting to learn but keep putting off?
Is it learning an instrument? Learning a language?
Tips for goal setting:
Stretch yourself
Be realistic
S - Specific (or Significant).
M - Measurable (or Meaningful).
A - Attainable (or Action-Oriented).
R - Relevant (or Rewarding).
T - Time-bound (or Trackable).
2. Be accountable
Accountability - Who do you have that has access to you? Who do you allow to speak into your life?
Patrick Lencioni in The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable defines accountability as "the willingness of team members to remind one another when they are not living up to the performance standards of the group".
An accountability partner isn't someone that simply tells you when you are wrong! There are enough of those people around. If you have spent any time at all in church ministry, you have found that there are people who aren't afraid to tell you when you are wrong…ha!
Get Around People That Can Think Big!
This is probably a topic to expand on later but…Get around people that can think big! People who you don't overwhelm them with your ideas. If you are always the one in your group that has the best ideas and knows the most…you should find some other people dream with.
3. Get feedback
This is where you really see if you want to grow or not…Get feedback…and then don't get defensive when someone gives you feedback other than "wow, That was great!"
4. Be transparent/vulnerable
It's not going to kill you to let people see that you aren't perfect. They already know it anyway.
5. Be comfortable in the process
Know that it's a process - Those infomercials aren't real. It's going to take more than 30 min to learn the guitar. You don't get amazing abs in 7 minutes...
This journey we are on in ministry is definitely a marathon and not a sprint. If you try and sprint the whole way, you will eventually burn out. Pace yourself and be comfortable with the process.
Here is the takeaway: Get started today. Write down some SMART goals. 2. Be accountable 3. Get Feedback 4. Be transparent 5. Be comfortable in the process.
