For the past few months, we have been hearing a lot about making India self-reliant, and the buzzword word “atmanirbharta” has been misused without appropriate context. So, my aim for today will be to shake off the political appeal given to the term and talk about its implications for India in a macroeconomic sense.

To explain what is possibly wrong with Modi's atmanirbhar Bharat I will draw some insights from a policy paper published by Arvind Subramanian and Shoumitro Chatterjee.
