Cable TV loves dieting. The Biggest Loser, My Diet is Better than Yours,
and Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition are just a few of the shows out
there designed to “inspire” or “show people how” to lose weight. Bodies,
though, hate dieting. If you’ve heard about the study they did on The
Biggest Loser contestants, you know that the weight loss achieved on the
show wasn’t sustainable. In this episode, we talk about these shows through
a different lens. We talk about the abusive nature of the shows, how they
contribute to fatphobia and discrimination, and how dieting for weight loss
really effects your body. The shows build up a shameful mindset about food,
exercise, and our bodies, even as a viewer who is not overweight or obese.
