016: BURNOUT: How to Combat It!

Today’s topic: How to combat burnout! How to avoid it, how to deal with it when it’s happening and what to do stop it or prevent it. Burnout is more than just being stressed or overwhelmed. Burnout is a serious issue that can lead to things like depression and even suicide if gone unaddressed.
One of the main issues that allows for burnout to happen is the fact that people don’t talk about burnout. If it’s you or someone you care about is dealing with the issue its important to seek professional help. Recognize the symptoms and take-action.

The warning signs: A) Exhaustion, in a downward spiral, B) Cynicism, sarcasm, compassion fatigue, C) Lack of efficacy. Feeling like you’re not making a difference. The work you’re doing is getting you nowhere.
Dave W. went through a lot of these symptoms when going through his divorce. He wasn’t able to give to anyone else because he was so drained. Dave reached out for professional help which helped him turn things around.
While its easy to say “get help” it may be difficult for people living with burnout to get help – so maybe you can reach out and help them.

a. Get more sleep. It’s not a priority and it needs to be.
b. He says to get 7 to 8 hours a night consistently. It’s been scientifically proven that when you don’t get enough sleep your cognition, mood, energy all suffer. You basically become an a-hole
c. Say no first. We tend to over commit ourselves saying yes to things without thinking about it first.
d. Look at it like a business decision. Be convinced that this is something you should take on.
e. schedule time to do email and texting. Block the time that you deal with texting and emailing instead of being frazzled by your phone all day long. No one needs to hear from you every 5 seconds. Set those boundaries with people so they know you don’t have time to email and text all day. Checking that constantly throughout the day means you’re checking out of whatever task you’re working on.
f. And the last thing he suggests is ask for help. We talked about this before and you and I both struggle with this.
