The German language has four cases: 
Nominative, Accusative, Dative, and Genitive. 

Each case is used to indicate the function of a noun in a sentence:

• Nominative case: for the subject of a sentence
• Accusative case: for the direct object of a sentence
• Dative case: for the indirect object of a sentence
• Genitive case: to show possession
