We All Have Something

017: Compassion Fatigue, Burnout & You

Listen Later

Compassion fatigue can be defined as a condition characterized by emotional and physical exhaustion leading to diminished ability to empathize or to feel compassion for others. Also, a secondary traumatic stress, sometimes described as the negative cost of caring too much.  This can happen when you have overextended your compassion for others. We see this in caretakers, in the medical field, mental health field and in environmental sciences to name a few.

With everything we have going on in the world today, it is important to recognize compassion fatigue (and similar traumatic stress) and how to work through it.  Possibly even more important, how to get ahead of it so you do not hit compassion fatigue and burnout.
