Seeking a fresh start, she travels abroad and meets Mr. George Western, a man heartbroken by his own romantic misfortunes. They marry, but Cecilia conceals her past engagement from him, despite his honesty about his own history. When Sir Francis reveals her secret, George feels betrayed and leaves for abroad, prompting Cecilia to return to her mother in Exeter.
