The Scaredy Cat Podcast

018 - House (1977)

Listen Later

This week on Scaredy Cat: we take a peek behind a curtain made of bananas as we discuss the 1977 Japanese horror film House. Director Obayashi and his 10 year old daughter show us (and seven teenage girls) what really happens when you visit your long lost aunt in the country. Hint: it's all INSANE.

Obayashi, reaching for innovative ideas for his first feature film, did what all creatives do in times of crisis: he asked his daughter. Together they wrote this juggernaut of a film, where seven teenage girls venture into the world of cannibalism, eternal youth, possible zombies, and spooky watermelons. Honestly, they did a bang up job. It's weird, the imagery is brutally haunting, the effects are 70's cutting edge, and the score will worm it's way into your brain and never ever ever ever ever ever ever leave.
