🔥[02-19] How to manage limited time and opportunities for creative work

Listen Later

Anjan Sannidhi: I recently had an assistant editor gig that took me two weeks to complete due to my obligations with the family business. Normally, that kind of work would only take a few days. Thankfully the producer is a friend of mine so she was okay with it, but I know others may not be. I want to discuss what this means for my career in documentary going forwards.

  • Define your guardrails and boundaries. Protect a strong boundary and claim two focused hours in the evening to have ten hours a week of realistic assistant editor capacity.
  • Accept that even a game changing opportunity can be a distraction if it violates your values, priorities, and current commitments.
  • Focus on existing relationships and referrals. Opportunities that fit ten hours a week will almost always come from people who already know your value.
  • Recognize the market reality. Lower budgets often mean more work for less pay, so your boundaries may limit new opportunities even further.
  • Treat assistant editing as a hobby or side hustle for now, something that feeds your creative soul.
