The story begins late at night in Montmartre, Paris's infamous district of nightclubs, cabarets, and criminal undercurrents. A striptease dancer named Arlette, frightened and clearly under the influence, walks into a police station and insists she’s overheard two men at her club planning a murder — the killing of a “countess.”
