02. The Machine Stops

Listen Later

In 1909, E. M. Forster imagined a world where life can no longer be supported on the face of the Earth. Humanity lives underground in isolation with all needs filled by an omnipotent Machine. All human interaction takes place through instant message and video conference, and traveling outside of the walls of one's underground cell is unpopular and unnecessary. This one hits a little too close to home in the year 2020 amidst Covid-19. Did Forster predict the future?
