02 Why You Feel Numb (And What It Actually Means)

Listen Later

Emotional numbness is often misunderstood as a lack of feeling, emotional failure, or disconnection from self. In reality, numbness is a meaningful psychological response that develops for a reason. In this episode of Everyday Counselling, we explore what emotional numbness actually is, why it occurs, and what it may be communicating about your internal experience.

This episode explains how numbness often emerges as a protective response to prolonged stress, emotional overwhelm, or experiences that feel too much to process at once. Rather than being the absence of emotion, numbness can indicate that your nervous system has shifted into a state of containment in order to cope. You will gain clarity on how this response develops, why it can persist, and why trying to force yourself to feel differently often leads to frustration rather than relief.

We also discuss how numbness differs from depression, avoidance, or apathy, and why it is not something to be judged or rushed away. Understanding numbness as information rather than a problem allows for a more compassionate and effective approach to emotional reconnection. This episode is particularly relevant if you feel detached, emotionally flat, or disconnected from yourself and want a grounded explanation of what is happening beneath the surface and how counselling can help restore emotional awareness over time.
