June and Jennifer were the only black kids in their 1960s Welsh school, and people assumed that that was why they never grew out of their special twin language. But by eleven, they refused to even speak to their family, and when people tried to separate them, each girl grew catatonic.

After dropping out at 16, June and Jennifer went on a crime spree and made a pact: when one twin died, the other got to live normally… and both June and Jennifer prayed for that day, when they would finally be rid of their “dark shadow.”
