021 - The Big Emotions in Home Creation

Today, I talk about the big emotions in home creation. This is the fourth episode in a multi-part series talking about the different things that can contribute to overwhelm in our homes and with our home creation.

In this episode, we look at about our reactions to certain situations and the reasons we might experience big emotions in homes and with our people. I share some ways we can better prepare ourselves for the moments when we feel really activated, especially when we might have little people with big emotions of their own.

Here’s a recap:

  1. Big emotions and big reactions are part of home creation and they contribute to feelings of overwhelm in our homes. It can be especially challenging to be faced with our own big emotions when we are also trying to help our people navigate their big emotions.
  2. Our reactions to certain situations or behaviours are often more a result of own stress levels and dysregulation, than about the actual situation or behaviour. 
  3. Practicing ways to regulate our nervous system can help us be better prepared for activating situations. Some ways we can practice regulating our nervous system are taking regular pauses and system resets throughout the day, working on transitions, opening up more spaciousness in our calendars and creating a home environment that supports our nervous system. 
  4. When we do experience big emotions and moments of activation, it is important to work through those big emotions by identify what activates us, learning our internal signs, recognizing our patterns, naming them with parts language, caring for ourselves, and repairing with our people. 
  5. We dive deeper into these practices and more in the Holistic Home Method.
