Hey what’s up everybody, this is Karim Amri. Welcome to Coaching Secrets Podcast.
In the previous 2 episodes of Building rapport series, we explored the meaning and importance of building rapport with others and mostly how we need to be conscious when building this rapport. We also went trough the different means of communication and we highlighted that words represents just 7% of the meaning of communication and that 55% is what the body say and 38% is what the voice tonality says.
During today’s episode we’ll talk about one of the most used and efficient technique to build rapport, focusing on the physiology part of the communication. Today’s techniques are called matching and mirroring
Matching in the act of matching the physiology of the other person with your own physiology, for example if the person in front of you put his right hand on his left hand , you put your right hand on your left hand. If the person, raises his left hand , you match him and raise your left hand.
Mirroring, is based on the same concept, but instead of raising your right arm, when the person you’re mirroring raises his right hand, you raise your left one.
It’s in fact reaching the point that in case you’re in front of each other, you’ll be almost playing his mirror.
The 2 techniques may look very simple, but they are highly efficient and very powerful when it comes to building rapport.
As it’s been always said, people who are like each other, like each other, the 2 techniques tend to get the other person like you, as you’re acting like him, and when they like you, they will open up with you, and share things with you.
It’s important to note that, matching and mirroring, should happen in a smooth and look like spontaneous way.
As these techniques focus basically on the physiology part, the same can also be applied on the voice tonality of the client or the person you’re talking to, if you’re usually loud and the person is speaking on low voice level, you need to match him, or at least reduce your voice level to avoid letting him feel the gap between both of you.
Before finishing today’s session, let me warn you about matching the accent of the other person, this is highly not recommended, as chance are high that he’s going to detect that, and when that happened , you simply brake all the rapport you already built.
That’s the end of today’s episode.
Thank you all for listening, keep growing and bye for now.
