A former government minster of the republic of Slovenia, he became a Member of the European Commission in 2004. and From 2010 – 2014 he took on a second mandate as Member of the European Commission responsible for Environment.

In 2014 he was appointed as a Co-Chair of International resource Panel hosted by the UN Environment Programme.
