Heather is a freelance writer appearing in publications like the Huffington Post and the New York Times as well as various other online publications.  She also blogs at Riding the Roller Coaster. She's a former military spouse, a mother of two, an avid runner, and everything in between.

We dive right in and talk about what success means to Heather as well as how Heather is working to find a few identity after divorce.  She shares all about how she had a major life plan when she started college. This plan included getting her undergraduate degree in 4 years, moving straight on to her master's, becoming a sports psychologist, getting married at 27, having her first baby at 30, publishing a novel, and finally having her second baby at 32. This all started to change when she didn't want to be a sports psychologist, she didn't want to keep going to school after her undergraduate degree and when she got married at 24 instead of 27! Life was going anything but according to her plan.

"My definition of success at age 38 is far different than it was 20 years ago...I was just starting out college and i had this huge plan of where my life was going to go and what success meant to me."
"I guess at that point in my life success meant having it all, but it didn't take me long to realize how unrealistic that was."

Heather shares with us about her different career paths, going back to school to get her Master's in elementary education, teaching kindergarten and realizing while she was a good teacher her heart was in her writing. She looked forward to getting home from teaching so she could write posts for her blog. While she always new she would pursue writing she never imagined she would be able to get paid for it. We also talk about when she felt lost, and didn't believe in herself.

"There was a time in my life a few years ago I felt completely lost. I was a stay at home mom...I was always somebody else's mom, somebody else's wife, somebody's daughter, somebody's friend and I didn't know where heather was anymore. Heather was just kind of gone and I didn't really believe in myself because I didn't really know what I wanted."

A big shift for Heather happened after her marriage of 13 years ended in divorce.

"I think success to me now is more about balance and happiness and less about chasing after the big picture. Now I find success in small victories because I think they bring me closer to my larger goals."
