028: Using Mindfulness to Calm Your Anxious Thoughts with Dr. Kristina Peck

Listen Later

In this week’s episode, my first therapist, Dr. Kristina Peck, talks about what mindfulness is, how it impacts our mental and physical health, and how we can implement mindful practices in our everyday lives. • 3 Key takeaways about mindfulness are:

    • Mindfulness is the quality of awareness that we bring to ourselves. Treat your thoughts like you treat mail. You filter out which mail is meaningful mail and which mail is just junk. You can do the same with your thoughts: what is actually meaningful to you and what needs to be thrown in the junk pile?
    • Focus on the “what” not the “why.” Focusing on the “what” allows you to feel a sensation or emotion and let it pass, whereas focusing on the “why” could cause you to mentally and physically spiral.
    • Mindfulness is not a goal, it is an action. It is meeting your thoughts with curiosity and letting them pass.
    • Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that’s me!). I work in corporate sales by day and am a personal development guru and Life Coach by night. My goal in this podcast is to share valuable and actionable tips on what I call the “Core Four” - mindfulness, movement, habits, and growth - so you can build a life that feels true to you. I will be interviewing people who have had a “wake up call” that their good-on-paper life wasn’t lighting them up, and what they did to change that. Join us every week for a new episode of the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins!
