What's in this episode?

It’s said that it's the plot that makes a reader pick up your book, but the character that keeps them reading. It’s vital that you have an interesting and engaging (although not necessarily likeable) character to keep your reader interested.

How do you develop that character? How do you know where to start? I have 5 questions you need to ask all your principal characters.

  1. What do they want?
  2. Why do they want it?
  3. What do they need?
  4. What's standing in their way?
  5. What's at stake if they fail?

Listen to the episode and find out more about how to answer each question.

Books mentioned in the episode:

  • Emma, Jane Austen
  • The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins
  • Tai Pan, James Clavell
