🔥[03-03] How to protect yourself from exploitation so you can do your best work

Listen Later

Jill Calhoun: I need to figure out how to give 100% at this new project and enjoy it. 100% focus and creativity while I’m there, despite the past few projects, when they’ve become similar to this one, I’ve had a really hard time with procrastination, emotional, eating, and emotional online shopping. I have to figure out a better attitude or something. I definitely need the money and it pays pretty well, so I am grateful to have this opportunity in that sense. I have a plan to have mornings to myself and I’m going to learn a language during my commute on the days I go in which is three days a week. So I will have two of my strongest values intact, education/growth and leisure time. I don’t want to feel invisible or underestimated, or like I’m trying to be a mind reader. It’s extremely stressful trying to be perfect for a lead Editor that is not me. There has to be a better perspective than the one I have. I think the most important outcome is a new perspective, an action steps on how to stay sane when I put so much pressure on myself to be perfect for others.

  • Refuse to start resentful. Negotiate until you feel valued and respected. If it is not in writing, it does not protect you. Do not sign until the terms match your guardrails.
  • Get ready to say no. If you are not willing to walk away, you are not negotiating.
  • Decide which problems you would rather live with before you commit.
  • Look at the role and offer from their perspective. They are paying for this job, not your entire resume. Choose yes or no based on the actual duties and rate.
  • Give them the benefit of the doubt on day one. Show up, do great work, and control what you can control. If you are wrong, make sure you are protected.
