🔥[03-03] Protect your runway with reciprocating commitment and loyalty

Listen Later

Itai Levin: I currently have a well paid project, but with no clear end date. I also have past clients, with new projects this year, who want me to reach out when I'm available. They aren't necessarily very clear about the exact details of what positions/projects would be filling when. I'm trying to figure out the best way to get more information from both current and prospect jobs, with out jumping ship to early. I also want to avoid committing to projects for which I won't be available, while at the same time not talking myself out of a job too soon, if it could be a good match.

  • Get the most clear information and expectations you do have and define the problem that it creates for you.
  • Use the same two tools you have always had, YES and NO. Fewer opportunities just mean you need more runway so you can be deliberate about what earns your commitment.
  • Ensure reciprocating commitment and loyalty. Have a clear understanding of the expectations so you can set specific boundaries.
  • Decide in advance what makes you jump ship. A union show, guaranteed long term employment, or significantly better pay becomes an obvious yes they would understand.
  • Communicate early and honestly about real possibilities. Let them know conversations are happening before they become emergencies that burn bridges.
