🔥[03-10] Use micro commitments to negotiate difficult project extensions

Listen Later

David Feinberg: I would like some strategy on dealing with a current project. It is indie and was considered closed to finished. The producer has just submitted a new papercut which would keep the overall macro structure in place but require a new assembly edit process. I need to gain clarity for myself on boundaries moving forward.

  • Start by clarifying the basics. Confirm the agreement , the pari-passu structure, the kit fee, and the remaining three days so everyone shares the same expectations before discussing any new direction.
  • Break everything down to micro commitments to guide the conversation. Ask simple questions that lead to clear yes answers so everyone agrees step by step on what was promised and what remains.
  • Decide your conditions before negotiating. Know what must change such as funding, timeline, or agreement terms if they want you to continue after the final three days.
  • Present clear options whether to continue under expanded terms, renegotiate the arrangement, or step aside if the new direction is not the right fit for you.
  • Strike first instead of waiting. Initiate the conversation early so expectations are clear and the team can make better decisions before assumptions form.
  • After the conversation, send a follow up email summarizing agreements and decisions so everyone shares the same written understanding.
