🔥[03-31] Connect with authenticity, vulnerability and expertise on your first podcast interview

Listen Later

Rob Tovey: I've been asked as a guest on a podcast for local videographers. I've not done a podcast before, but I thought this would be a good chance to get my name out there in the local community. I want to know how to strike a balance between having a good, honest conversation, but also being able to paint myself in a good light and not come across as inexperienced seeing as I've not been in the industry that long.

  • Start with the audience. Understand who is listening and why, then shape your stories so they solve their problems instead of showcasing yourself.
  • Speak as a peer who’s slightly ahead. Offer what has worked for you without pretending to have everything figured out.
  • Connect with the audience with authenticity and vulnerability where you can frame your expertise. Focus on insights that help others navigate similar challenges and make personal stories relatable so listeners see themselves in your journey.
  • Position yourself as the guide, not the hero. Share experiences through their lens so listeners feel seen, understood, and supported in their own journey.
  • Drop the need to sell and focus on being useful. The more value you provide, the more people will want to engage further and build relationships with you that may naturally lead to opportunities.
