03 I Peter 1:3-9 - Our Salvation : Bringing Praise and Joy

Listen Later

Title: Our Salvation: Bringing Praise and Joy
Text: I Peter 1:3-9
FCF: We often struggle with taking our salvation for granted.
Prop: Because we are guarded by God’s power through faith, we must praise God and rejoice for His gift of salvation.
Scripture Intro:
[Slide 1] Turn in your bible to I Peter 1.
Although last week was incredibly heady and somewhat theological, we pointed out at our bible study that what has become such a huge topic of controversy in the church today, was intended by Peter to be a point of comfort for his audience. Their divine election according to the predetermination of God through the regeneration of the Spirit to obedience of the gospel and cleansing in Christ’s blood, was a point of comfort for them. To know that they are exactly where God has them – even though they are suffering.
I praise the Lord for the text we will read this morning. Not only is it lacking most of the controversy of last week’s message, but it moves us to do exactly what last week’s message was designed to do. To praise the Lord for His marvelous work and to rejoice in the reality and surety of our salvation!
This week’s message is short, powerful, and immediately applicable to us.
If you have lost the joy of your salvation… if you are plodding along in your Christian walk…
I hope and I trust that this message will be a great jolt to you.
I am in I Peter chapter 1 and I’ll begin reading in verse 3. I am reading from the CSB but you can follow in the pew bible on page 1364 or whatever version you have in front of you.
Transition:
As I said, this is a short sermon, we are doing it early in the service, and we have a lot planned after it. I am so excited to share all this with you… this message is so encouraging! Are you ready? Let’s go!
I.) We are guarded by God’s power through faith, so we must praise God for His ongoing work in us. (3-5)
a. [Slide 2] 3 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
i. This word blessed means adoration or praise.
ii. Its verb form means to invoke a blessing. It is where we get our word for eulogy from.
iii. God needs nothing, and so God being blessed is never speaking of giving Him something He needs.
iv. However, God deserves highest praise. Even without the specific reason that will be outlined in this text, God, being the God of the universe, the God of whom it is said there is none beside him or like Him or comparable to Him, this God, Yahweh, is worthy of praise and worship even if He never interacted with His creation.
v. God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, having elected us according to the predetermination of His will, having accomplished this through the regenerating power of His Spirit, to make us obedient to the gospel and be cleansed by the blood of Christ – this same Father is worthy of praise.
vi. Notice that although it is not wrong for us to call Him our Father – Peter does not do this. He is first, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
vii. This is subtle but important.
viii. Why is He OUR Father?
ix. He is our Father through adoption. He is our Father by marriage to Christ. He is our Father only in so much as we are united to Christ – and He is Christ’s Father.
x. Again, it is not wrong for us to call Him, Our Father… but we must know what we mean when we say these things. When we understand this – when we say, Our Father, it is from a place of great humility. Knowing – that we don’t deserve to address Him this way, but He has made us deserving. We are unworthy to call Him Father, but He has adopted us! According to the predetermination of His will.
xi. It is important that we stack upon itself all the information that we have learned in this book, about our great salvation. That will prompt us to act as Peter is expecting his audience to act.
xii. And the first response, having seen this salvation rooted in His divine will, is praise to that Father who chose us in His Son.
xiii. All Praise be to Him.
xiv. But Peter wants to explain the “why” of this praise a little more.
b. [Slide 3] Because of His great mercy He has given us new birth
i. If I were to ask what is the 1 characteristic the God of the Old Testament is known for by the world’s standards… what do you think it would be?
ii. He is a God of wrath, judgment, and severity.
iii. About 6 years ago we started Foundations. Our goal at first was to get through the entire bible in 4 years. We made it to II Kings 15 in 6 years. So… just missed it.
