03. Reinventing your path with Sam Dziemianko

Sam Dziemianko is Senior learning programme manager at Amazon, company second in command for the British army and in his former roles he was a Career development manager in higher education. 

 

But, as you know, it goes beyond role titles here and Sam also is one of the bubbliest, kindest and energised people I’ve met. His high energy, always can-do attitude and willingness to help and support are truly second to none. 

 

We frequently hear about career challenges. The market is indeed tough at this moment, but I wanted to bring you a story of success, of daring, of curiosity and leading with “what if I say yes”. That is what Sam shared with us this week, how responding to a DM turned into unlocking a whole different pathway. 

 

During our chat we discussed:

 

1.    Doors open: Sam was approached via LinkedIn. A message landing, some doubts and sceptical thoughts… that led to a career change and a whole new level of learning and discovery at Amazon!

 

2.    Leadership: Sam had a successful career in Higher Education, but his path at Amazon unveiled, and continues to shape, his pathway. This involved upskilling, re-skilling and levelling up in many ways than one! He discussed the challenges of leaving a supportive team and adapting to a fast-paced, action-oriented environment, where he learned to embrace not having all the answers during the initial learning period. Sam also described his current role, which involves managing multiple sites across Europe and balancing work with his Army Reserve responsibilities, highlighting the importance of maintaining a detailed schedule and finding ways to stay connected with the business through outreach activities.

 

3.    Work-Life balance: you hear many things about Amazon, some true some maybe not as much… Sam shared what it really means to have a demanding job with a busy agenda… and how to stay grounded and centred. 

 

4.    Growth challenges and alignment: Sam raised an important point during our conversation – the importance of finding a place that aligns with your values and motivations. Amazon is not the place for everyone, as isn’t the case with many companies and individuals. Finding your fit is a key part of the journey. 

 

5.    Connection: networking, conversations, openness… these unlock more opportunities than we can imagine! Taking risks, understanding your strengths and values, and being able to lead with authenticity is key to unlocking career (and life!) opportunities.
