Derek Cooper is a composer and music educator based out of the greater New York City area. He earned both his Masters and Doctorate from the Manhattan School of Music. Derek is currently on faculty at Ramapo College in New Jersey, where he teaches music theory. Derek has a large catalogue of music ranging from solo piano music to larger works for full orchestra. He is also a member of the Iceberg Institute, which is a group that consists of composers promoting new music throughout NYC.

Today we talk about what composing actually is. The nuanced aspects that go into writing music. Derek helps us expand our perspective by stepping outside the box. He also shared the positive and negative sides to academia.
