Hey what’s up everybody, this is Karim Amri. Welcome to Coaching Secrets Podcast.
Having a positive attitude or having a negative attitude? Whether when assessing ourselves, our clients, our colleagues or even characters in movies, we mostly take one side in our judgement, whether we or they are positive or negative, positively wired or negatively wired, positive mindset or negative mindset.
It happen sometimes even when we’re in certain shopping places and after a first interaction with some of the staff we directly assess him as positive guy or negative, and most probably this will affect our buying decision.
This is what we mostly thought, but the question we’re going to tackle today, is : Do we need to be positive all the time?
Lots of researchers and phycologists explored this same question, and if we look at it in scientific level and according to Dr. Barbara Fredrickson, positivity researcher at the University of North Carolina, for every negative emotion experienced we need 3 positive experience to get back things to balance and recover the harm done by the negative one.
When I talk about positive emotions I mean happiness, gratitude, joy, appreciation…
This 3 to 1 ration is also what many other researches led to.
But lets look at the concept at our simple practical daily life.
When we meet a salesman at a car showroom, who’s very positive, complying to all our needs, answering positively our questions and even adding to us some extra value that we didn’t ask or think about it, we’ll feel kind a suspicious,
we may think internally and said to ourselves, “ it smells fishy !”
“What’s he hiding, what’s the reason behind all this care”
The same will happen if a new collogue joins in the same company, and who’s trying to be extremely nice and helpful, first impression we may feel threatened, we will think he’s showing off to be the first to promote, and maybe he’s trying to putting us in trouble.
In fact, even in these situations, far from what the science said, considering a ration of 3 to 1, will be good, for us on all aspects, no need to exhaust ourselves by being positive even when we don’t feel like, and avoid any suspicion that can only lead to negativity.
Let’s apply out 3 to 1 positivity concepts, in all the areas and stages of our coaching business.
Thank you all for listening.
That’s all for today., keep growing and bye for now.
