Lyra is asleep as this chapter opens - shocking no one - but gets a startled awakening by Thorold, who tells her that Lord Asriel has ‘gone mad’ and taken Roger away into the middle of the Arctic night. Confused, sleepy and increasingly worried about Lord Asriel’s intentions, Lyra sets off after her father to try to save her friend one more time.
