033: Skye McLain, Virtual Assistant and Business Owner
Skye is just your regular southern girl, a Texas girl at heart, living in Louisiana with her husband and new son! A total type-a, list-making, obsessive-compulsive, task-oriented, perfectionist maniac. Her day job is a behind the scenes ninja as a virtual assistant to creative bloggers and handmade business owners. Her creative escape is Your Texas is Showing™, a line of tees for those who like to let their Texas hang out a bit!
We had a blast chatting with Skye! She shares about her many jobs and degrees she went to school for before she would her "IT" job!
"I had no idea that you could make a career out of doing something from home that you loved where you could be creative."
From a failed etsy shop and blog she realized she loved the behind the scenes stuff. Creating listings, putting processes in place, and doing all those detailed orientated things many business owners don't like to do! Skye also shares with us that when she decided to start a virtual assistant business she did the online version of cold calling and emailed a few bloggers/handmade business owners to see if they needed help! They said yes!
"It's so important to find your own version of success because you can't base anything that you do off of other people. You're going to end up failing every time."
She describes success for her right now,
"I have learned a lot about who I am, a lot about what I can and can't do. Where my strengths are and were my weaknesses are and I've owned that."
"Success has been learning how to really manage my time. Be the boss of my own time rather than let somebody else be the boss of it for me."
Skye held many different jobs for many years. She says she said "yes" to a lot of things without thinking too much about it. She knew if she just kept going she would eventually find what made her feel fulfilled. But it by no means happened over night! She spent years in the more corporate or traditional working world before she started her virtual assistant business 4 years ago. 2.5 years ago she took that business full-time, thanks to a boss who fired her! Yes, she was fired! Not the way most people are fired, her boss knew Skye was on to something and knew she wouldn't take the leap unless she got a bit of a push.
"I knew that there was something better for me and I knew that there was something that would make me feel fulfilled and make me happy as a person. I just had to wait. And when the timing was right it happened. It took years."
