The Jonestown massacre was a mass murder-suicide that occurred on November 18, 1978, in a remote cult commune in Guyana, resulting in the deaths of 918 people. Orchestrated by Jim Jones, the leader of the Peoples Temple cult, it stood as the largest single loss of American civilian life in a deliberate act until the September 11 attacks.
