Hey Fellow Dads,

How should wise, godly men relate to their mothers, mothers-in-law, and grandmothers? How do we lead our children—especially our sons—to do so? In this episode we'll think about four scriptural guidelines, along with a handful of helpful books, to help us relate to these important women as God intends us to.

“When all is said and done, it is the mother, and the mother only, who is a better citizen than the soldier who fights for his country. … The mother who does her part in rearing and training aright the boys and girls who are to be the men and women of the next generation, is of greater use to the community, and occupies, if she only would realize it, a more honorable as well as more important position than any man in it. She is more important, by far, than the successful statesman, or businessman, or artist, or scientist.”

“Homemaking is surely in reality the most important work in the world. What do ships, railways, mines, cars, government, etc. exist for except that people may be fed, warmed, and safe in their own homes?...The homemaker’s job is one for which all others exist.”

“All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.”

“All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.”

“No man is poor who has a Godly mother.”

“In spite of all this, I still held fast to the notion that a race which could produce as good and gentle and loving a woman as my mother must have some good in it that the geographers had failed to discover.”

“Men—grown men—are commanded to honour their fathers and their mothers.”

“Finally, allow me to recommend one more way that we as men can honor our mothers, bring them happiness, and help them, as well as lead our children to do the same—it’s something you can begin doing today, if you don’t already, and it won’t cost you a penny.

“Pray for your mothers. Pray for your mom. Pray for your grandmothers. And, of course, pray for your wife.

“Pray that God to show them His mercy and grace and truth; and enable them to trust and love the Lord Jesus Christ; and help them to be led by His Holy Spirit; and pour His bountiful blessings upon them—spirit, soul, and body.   “And allow your children to hear you pray for them too.”

Scriptural guidelines for relating to our mothers:

God expects us to hold our mothers in high esteem—to honor them.

God teaches us to heed their wisdom.

God is pleased when we make our mothers happy (through our living in wisdom and truth).

We should do whatever we can to help our mothers.
