The soundtrack in this week's episode is called Sunlight Meditation. It’s a gentle, calming piece which might be used for meditation or yoga videos. The instrumentation includes a gentle Eastern bell-like sound, a string ensemble and a glassy atmospheric pad. It’s suitable as an intro theme for inspirational podcasts about family, lifestyle design, healthcare, nutrition and spirituality.
* Being unpredictable by going off the tempo grid is a good way to create intrigue. Most music throughout history was created without a tempo guide track, but rather by following a leader or shared rhythm. In meditation music, following the organic human timing of a guide figure (such as a shaman) sounds better than following the unnatural rigidness of a click track. This is nature music.
* Silence is calming, but does run the risk of boring an audience used to being assaulted by audio. We live in a measurably loud world! Use just enough silence.
* Temple bell sounds work best to convey spirituality. The listener’s mind is always scanning for something familiar. Soundtrack composers use that to our advantage.
* Use long reverb and delay values for gentle atmospheric music and shorter values for punchier music.
* This piece had jazz piano origins! Experiment with your composition across different genres. It might end up being better as something different to how it started.

How I Make Music is a show for music producers, podcasters and storytellers to better understand how digital-era composers make their music. Hey, I'm John Bartmann and I’m from Cape Town, South Africa. I write music and offer my own perspective on how to make it. My soundtracks, moods and themes have been used in commercial film, TV and radio, and also in plenty of non-commercial videos, podcasts and audio dramas. Each week, I write, record and release a new soundtrack. In this podcast, I deconstruct these original soundtracks one by one, sharing the separate musical parts, decisions and stories behind how each complete tune was made. Why? To help you better understand how to make, select and use production music that grips your audience.
