The US–Israel–Iran war, which began in late February 2026 with major strikes on Iran, escalated through missile attacks and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, but a fragile two-week ceasefire was reached on April 7–8 requiring Iran to reopen the strait in exchange for a pause in US bombing, with both sides claiming victory. However, the deal remains unstable due to limited shipping, Iran’s proposed transit fees, and continued Israeli strikes in Lebanon—excluded from the agreement—which risk reigniting broader conflict.

The war was influenced by Israeli efforts to persuade President Trump of a quick victory, and current negotiations are based on Iran’s 10-point plan, which could strengthen its position if adopted. Meanwhile, the conflict has strained global alliances and boosted Russia, while in the US, Democratic election gains and political controversies are adding pressure ahead of midterms, with upcoming talks in Pakistan set to determine whether the ceasefire holds or collapses.
