🔥[04-16] How to break down your goals and narrow your focus into clear controllable steps

Listen Later

Josh Neufeld: I need help getting some clarity on what I need to be focusing my attention on right now.

  • If you lack clarity on where to focus, work upstream from the GO FAR framework and define your SCARY Goal by the end of the year and break down your goal to something that is within your control.
  • Understand that the context of someone in your network changes. Under the right circumstances, a mentor can become your advocate and having more mentors can eventually lead to more advocates.
  • Do things that are within your control. Do research to figure out the playing field, the actual jobs, and the people that are doing those jobs.
  • Reach out to people who can help you overcome an obstacle and provide enough value by allowing them to feel genuinely useful.
  • Look for assistant editors on their first or second season, who can be your experts in the context of working on a scripted show. Narrow down your research to specific people that are close to being your peers, but are two steps ahead of you.
  • Prioritize reshaping the story of your resume, knowing that there is an advocate that can vouch you to gatekeepers.
  • Consider working on a low profile and less risky scripted show that can get you that one credit.
